
You both were young children when I first met him. Everything that was in his heart could be felt in one of those good hugs of his. I also want to add he was the best hugger of all time. Talks with him could lead to a new perspective that just made you feel better. He was one of kind and a gem in this life.

Yes, he was a really good listener, had a great sense of humor, was patient, honest, and loved those around him with such sincerity. Your father became a my mentor not only for work but for my life more importantly one of my greatest friends of all time. I didn't know it at the time but it was certainly to become my dream job of all time.

It was soon after that your dad offered me a job at the Multnomah Art Center. I moved to Portland from New Orleans in 1994. I know you'll hear this many times over but I must include my own admiration of him to you as well and say he was just so wonderful. I was so saddened to hear about the death of your dad. Formed as a weekly “pick-up” game each week, with a year-end awards presentation to celebrate the serious and not-so-serious side of softball, the Pinecones game continues to engage new players each summer.Įric was a beloved father who was actively engaged in his children’s lives, spinning long bedtime stories, coaching soccer teams, taking road trips to National Parks, and helping with calculus homework late into the night.įor more than 20 years, Eric led large Passover seders in his home, which were known for his original haggadah and exuberant folk songs about freedom mixed into the traditional tunes.Įric leaves his son, Zachary Hamilla (Joyce) of Milwaukie, OR his daughter, Zoë Dash, of Seattle his sister Stefanie Dash Marvel (Jonathan), his brother, Stuart Dash (Robin) his niece Johanna Marvel, and three nephews, Adam Marvel, David Dash and Sam Dash. Shortly after arriving in Portland, Eric founded the co-ed Pinecones Softball League, a summer highlight for many Portlanders over the last 33 years.

He was a talented competitor in ping-pong, chess and softball, and an engaging storyteller with a sharp and unforgettable sense of humor. He often led children’s sing-along concerts at community centers, performance halls and schools in greater Portland.Įric’s music legacy includes five albums of original songs for children, including his latest album of musical stories, “Zirp the Fox Goes For a Ride,” as well as a number of recordings of his original jazz compositions.Įric was also a painter, and many of his oil paintings were shown in an exhibition at the Multnomah Arts Center in 2009.īesides his passion for the arts, Eric was known for his big heart, thoughtful listening, great intelligence, wide ranging knowledge and exceptional word skills. He also taught a weekly preschool sing-along class for over 20 years. Eric began teaching guitar, piano and children’s composition at Multnomah Arts Center in 1981 and later become the director of performing arts, a position he held for 28 years. He studied composition with Henry Brant and jazz piano with Lennie Tristano.Īfter biking across country, Eric settled down in Portland where he lived for more than 35 years.

He held a BA in music from Bennington College and an MFA in Music Composition from Sarah Lawrence College. He was a composer, songwriter and jazz pianist who performed in Santa Fe, New York, and greater Portland. He grew up in Old Tappan, New Jersey and Nyack, New York. Eric was born October 29, 1950, in Plainfield, New Jersey, the second child of Harvey and Ruth Strom Dash. Eric Dash died peacefully at home in Portland on Decemafter battling brain cancer.
